Upon her casting, Millie Gibson said in a statement, “Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor’s companion.

“It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me.

“What better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.”

Doctor Who will return next year with the creator of the critically acclaimed TV show It’s a Sin and the original Queer as Folk, Russell T Davies as showrunner. Davies had led the revival of Doctor Who from 2005 to 2009.

Millie Gibson is best known for her role as Kelly Neelan in Coronation Street. She received the best young performer award for the role at the British Soap Awards earlier this year. Some of her plots have included being homeless, being involved in a hate crime, being kidnaped and having her mother die of cancer.

Although she is known for her work on Coronation Street, she appeared in one episode of the BBC One drama series Love, Lies and Records as a character called Mia.
