Ed Sheeran has always stated his admiration for rapper Eminem. The two collaborated in several performances and have praised each other time and time again. While Sheeran is a dear friend to Slim Shady, the latter is also known to be friends with many other influential artists in Hollywood.
Given Eminem's fruitful career as a musician, his generous spirit, and his worldwide fame as a global icon, his list of friends is definitely long. However, there are quite a few who are known to be closest to him, namely Rihanna, Dr. Dre, and 50 Cent.
He is also said to have been friends with late actor Brittany Murphy whom he met while filming the movie 8 Mile. While Eminem did not confirm his alleged romance with Murphy, the actress had once confirmed that she was dating the rapper. During an interview with David Letterman in her 2002 appearance on The Late Show, Murphy said that their off-camera relationship went “well.”
Murphy and Eminem may have been lovers, but Eminem is also known to have some solid friends in Hollywood, one of them being Ed Sheeran. The two have released songs, namely "River," "In Your Head," "Remember The Name," and "Chloraseptic." They have performed together quite often, but even the fan-favorite Sheeran isn't Eminem's most interesting connection.
Ed Sheeran Has Always Been A Fan Of Eminem
Ed Sheeran had once flaunted his rapping skills in Eminem's song “Kill You.” While Sheeran does not rap in his songs professionally, he did not hesitate to drop the bars while honoring one of his favorite rappers.
The "Perfect" singer also invited Eminem to be his guest performer at one of his concerts at Ford Field in Detroit and during an intimate performance at the Royal Oak Music Theatre.
In the concert, Sheeran first asked the audience if he could play a cover of Eminem’s song for them. The "Shape Of You" singer then invited “Slim Shady” on stage where they performed his hit songs “Lose Yourself” and “Stan.” Sheeran covered the parts that were originally performed by Dido.
While speaking to the audience in Detroit, Eminem said, “Detroit, I missed you… I appreciate you, Detroit. I love you.”
Not only that, Eminem and Sheeran also sang the same song together during the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Ed Sheeran had previously expressed his love for Eminem and revealed that the rapper’s songs helped him cure his stutter as a kid.
In an interview on The Howard Stern Show, Sheeran also opened up on admiring Eminem's approach towards fame and life.
While calling the rapper "reclusive," he noted, "I've known him now six years, and we've done three songs together, I've played with him twice on stage. He's another person I really relate to, as he lives in his hometown still and has his ecosystem around him."
Eminem Is Friends With Ed, And Plenty Of Other Musicians
Not only Ed Sheeran, but Eminem has many musician friends with whom he is very close. The rapper is close friends with 50 Cent with whom he also performed at last year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show.
While a part of Eminem's performance had given rise to new controversies regarding a symbolic stance, the show also witnessed his camaraderie with his long-time friend, 50 Cent.
Sharing a photo of him and Eminem on his social media platform, 50 Cent wrote, “This friendship is never gonna change.” In fact, 50 Cent is also signed to Eminem’s recording label Shady Records.
The latter honored 50 Cent with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame to express his appreciation for his “business partner” and “friend.”
The two friends also collaborated with Ed Sheeran in his hip-hop-based track “Remember The Name.”
Eminem is also friends with Dr. Dre. The rapper discovered Eminem’s music potential and signed him in 1998. As stated earlier, Slim Shady is close to Rihanna. The two collaborated on several tracks and co-headlined a tour in 2014.
His musician friends also include Nicki Minaj, whom he also reportedly secretly dated, Snoop Dogg, P!nk, Lil Wayne, Jack Harlow, and Lady Gaga, with some of whom Eminem has collaborated on several tracks.
However, his friendship with Elton John is the most talked-about ever since they performed together at the 2001 Grammy Awards.
Eminem Might Be Controversial, But He Has Many Celebrity Friends, Including Sir Elton John
Eminem is also close with Blink 182’s drummer Travis Barker. The latter remixed several tracks for Eminem and the duo has performed several live shows together. Rapper and songwriter Jay-Z is also known to be Eminem’s close pal. Moreover, actor Jonah Hill is also known to be one of Eminem’s closest friends.
No matter who Mathers is friends with, there is always some mention of his long-term friendship with Elton John. The two have been inseparable ever since they collaborated as musicians and their friendship is one for the history books.
While recalling their first meeting, Elton John quipped on The Graham Norton Show that they became “amazing friends” from the moment they met. The "Tiny Dancer" singer also stated that he adores the rapper for being an “amazing guy.”
It is definitely not uncommon for musicians to be friends. However, Eminem has received a considerable amount of backlash for using homophobic lyrics in his songs.
As John himself identifies as gay, Eminem had once referred to his friendship with the "I’m Still Standing" singer during his interview with MTV in 2004.
He said, "I didn’t know he [Elton John] was gay. I didn’t know anything about his personal life. I didn’t really care… But being that he was gay, and he had my back, I think it made a statement in itself saying that he understood where I was coming from."
In an interview with The Guardian, Eminem also referred to his drug addiction and the person that he called first when he decided to get sober. He stated that he reached out to the singer and asked for his advice. John himself overcame his cocaine addiction in the '90s which must have helped him guide the rapper in his journey to sobriety.
The two reportedly have conversations over the phone and Elton has also admitted to being a Marshall Mathers fan himself!
