Barnes in the sitcom 8 Simple Rules (2004–2005). He was nominated for Primetime Emmy Award and two Golden Globes for his performance in Just Shoot Me! He voiced Ranger Frank in The Rugrats Movie (1998), Kuzco in The Emperor’s New Groove (2000) and Kronk’s New Groove (2005), the red panda Aliur in Snowflake, the White Gorilla (2013), and Griffin the Invisible Man in the Hotel Transylvania film series (2012). Spade hosted a late-night talk show Lights Out with David Spade, which premiered on July 29, 2019. Spade’s comedic style, in both his stand-up material and acting roles, relies heavily on sarcasm and self-deprecation.

Saturday Night Live

In 1990, he joined Saturday Night Live with the help of a friend and fellow comic, Dennis Miller. Spade began as a writer and rose through the ranks to become a cast member. He became known for his style of sarcasm when he was there, and his characters in a number of skits were big hits.

A flight attendant for “Total Bastard Airlines” says a dismissive “Buh Bye” to each passenger as they disembark; a Dick Clark receptionist who asks people indiscriminately, “And you are?” as a matter of policy; and the quickwitted “Hollywood Minute” reporter who roasts celebrities with personal one-liners.

Christy Henderson from the Gap Girls and Karl from the Karl’s Video skits are among the other characters. He also did celebrity impersonation, including Brad Pitt and Michael J. Fox.
According to Spade’s interviews, most of the early stuff he created for SNL was delivered to Dana Carvey to perform on the show. Spade chose to stay on the show for the 1995–96 season after the significant cast revamps following the 1994–1995 season to serve as a bridge between the former cast and new cast members Will Ferrell, Molly Shannon, and Cheri Oteri.

Spade had a weekly piece called “Spade in America” during this season, which was a spin-off of his “Hollywood Minute” and “Weekend Update” observations. Spade was resurrected on December 9, 1995 “Spade remarked, “Look, children, it’s a falling star,” during one of his “Spade in America” segments.

Wish upon a star! “next to a photo of Eddie Murphy, a former cast member of Saturday Night Live. Murphy’s previous film office failures, particularly the flop Vampire in Brooklyn, were referenced in the one-liner. For several years following that remark, Murphy turned against both Spade and SNL.

Two days later, Spade received an irate phone call from Murphy at the SNL headquarters, according to his 2015 memoir; the two did not reconcile until a chance meeting in 2011. Spade left Saturday NightLive in 1996. In 1998, he returned to host an episode, and in 2005, he hosted another.

Breakout into film

Spade starred with fellow Saturday Night Live cast member Chris Farley in two buddy comedy films, Tommy Boy (1995) and Black Sheep (1996). The two were planning a third film together when Farley died of a drug overdose in 1997 at the age of 33.

When Spade declined to attend Farley’s funeral, rumors abounded that there had been a falling out between the two. Spade stated that their friendship had been under some tension, partly because of Farley’s drug problem and reckless lifestyle, which Spade admittedly could not keep up with.

However, none of it ever escalated to ill will, and that the reason he did not attend the funeral was simply that he could not handle it emotionally.

Return to television, voice work, and Joe Dirt

Although he received several offers to star in his own TV shows, he turned them down and joined the ensemble cast of Steven Levitan’s office sitcom Just Shoot Me!, opposite Laura San Giacomo and George Segal, which ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003. He played a sarcastic receptionist, Dennis Finch.

In 2000, Spade provided the voice of Kuzco in Disney’s buddy comedy film, The Emperor’s New Groove (2000), and would later reprise the role in its direct-to-video sequel Kronk’s New Groove (2005).

While appearing on Just Shoot Me, Spade had his first solo starring role as the title character in the 2001 film Joe Dirt, which was a modest box office success. The film was co-written by Spade and Fred Wolf.

Further film work and television hosting

Spade reprised his role as Dickie Roberts in the 2003 film Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, which was again co-written by Spade and Wolf. It was the first of many films in which Spade appeared, all of which were produced by Adam Sandler, another Saturday Night Live castmate.  Grown Ups (2010) and Grown Ups (2013), both of which starred Spade and Sandler and were box office smashes, are the most prominent of these. In 2003, Spade presented both the Teen Choice Awards and the SpikeTV Video Game Awards. In 2000, he produced his own TV series, Sammy, and voiced characters on multiple episodes of Beavis and Butthead. Spade starred in series of ads for Capital One (with Nate Torrence) from 2002 to 2006 in which he played an employee of fictional rival corporation whose policy on credit card rewards (and just about everything else) is “always no.”  Following the death of the sitcom’s lead, John Ritter, in 2004, he joined the cast of Simple Rules for the show’s third and final season.  From September 2005 to October 2007, he hosted the Comedy Central TV show The Showbiz Show with David Spade for three seasons.  Spade made fun of Hollywood and celebrities on the show, akin to his former “Hollywood Minute” segment on Saturday Night Live.

Video game work, animation, and television acting

Spade supplied the voice of Sparx, Spyro’s dragonfly sidekick, in the 2006 video game The Legend of Spyro: New Beginning.  He played Russell Dunbar on the CBS ensemble sitcom Rules of Engagement from 2007 until 2013.  He worked on pilot for an animated series based on Joe Dirt with TBS in 2010, but it was later canceled. Spade had guest appearance on an episode of the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs in 2014 (in which his former Just Shoot Me co-star George Segal plays “Pops,” the protagonist’s grandfather).  Pops and Spade’s characters had scene together in the end credits.

Lights Out with David Spade

In 2019, he began hosting new late-night show on Comedy Central called Lights Out with David Spade.  The Colbert Report, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, and The Opposition with Jordan Klepper all aired after The Daily Show, in the former slot occupied by The Colbert Report, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, and The Opposition with Jordan Klepper.  Comedy Central indicated that the show would not return to the station once production can begin due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but would instead be shopped around to third-party broadcaster.  While Jimmy Kimmel was on vacation in August 2020, Spade guest-hosted two episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
